Even if Dorothy went down in flames before I brought Baret back up I had my off-site backups.I knew I had full copies of all of my data on Dorothy and Dorothy was completely unaffected a huge benefit of having a separate, dedicated backup server. At that point I was sure that 20TB of data had been erased from Baret's backup pools.īut, I didn't lose any data. Then I discovered the NAS-105782 bug report. I went through all of the encryption issue troubleshooting steps no luck. When I was all set I went to unlock Baret's pools and log off. My experimenting involved exporting and deleting pools. I planned on doing some experimenting anyway with some spare disks I have. In the Spring of 2020 Baret had an unscheduled reboot, locking both pools until I logged on. Any time I add irreplaceable data to Dorothy I rotate Baret's disks once replication completes so my off-sites always contain my most precious data.Worst-case my house burns down and I still have off-site copies, though admittedly a little out of date. I keep spare copies of both of Baret's pools off-site and rotate them with Baret on a regular basis.Baret has 2 pools that receive backups, both encrypted because.Baret always goes first, then Dorothy once I see that Baret is stable. I never upgrade their FreeNAS version simultaneously.Dorothy is configured to take regular snapshots and send them to Baret over a dedicated 10Gbit/s connection via zfs replication.Dorothy is my production server Baret is my backup server. Here is my backup strategy at the time of writing. We've all heard the 3-2-1 rule, right? Well, I don't follow it exactly, but I do well enough (I break the "2" rule). So is there a way to do what I originally hoped to do? Extend one of the mirrored pools to the free pair of drives to end up with 2 drives striped together mirrored with 2 other drives striped together? Once the second NAS box has been copied, I'll have the 3TB drives free from it. ![]() So I ended up creating a second mirrored pool with those two drives and I am now copying the contents of the second RAID 0 NAS box to that pool. But I couldn't figure out how to do that. I wanted to end up with 2 3TB drives striped to a 6TB pool and mirrored onto the second pair of 3TB drives also striped to 6TB. ![]() What I wanted to do was then take the 2 3TB drives from the old NAS box and add them as striped drives to the existing mirrored pool. I am assuming that is essentially the same as my RAID 0 NAS boxes since the pool size was the same as 1 3TB drive? Then I installed Windows in a VM on FreeNAS and used FreeFileSync to copy everything from one of my RAID 0 NAS boxes to the FreeNAS pool. Installed the 2 spare 3TB drives in the FreeNAS server and set up a mirror pool. I had 2 spare 3TB drives so here is what I have done so far: Very noob here! Been using FreeNAS for all of 1 week now and absolutely LOVE it! I am migrating from 2 RAID 0 NAS boxes with 2x 3TB drives each to a FreeNAS server.
